It has long been a tradition for American high school stidenrs to
Spend their summer vacationworking. As well as being a chance to
earn money, the summer job has generally been regarded as an
important step in the growing up process because it teached
responsibility and interpersonal skills. Despite this, changes in both
young people7s attitudes and the labor market have strongly impacted
the number of teens employed during the summer. Today,
approximately one-third of teens have summer jobs – a figure that is
roughly half what it was just four decades ago.
Parents once encouraged their children to take summer jobs to
gain basic skills that would serve them later in the working world.
However, many students today are more concerned about education.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics found that in the last 20 years, the number of
16-to-19-year-olds enrolled in summer school has tripled. As college degrees
have become essential for career success and tuition fees continue to rise,
many students have realized that taking advanced classes during the
summer to win scholarships can be more beneficial than working at a
minimum-wage job.
Another factor behind the decreasing popularity of summer jobs
may be a decrease in employment opportunities. Recently, many teenagers have
been choosing to do unpaid internship during the summer. As older adults are
remaining in the workforce longer than ever, many young graduates
have been losing out to these more experienced applicants even for
entry-level positions. Consequently, the chance to acquire career-
spefic skills has become more appealing. With the US ecocomy
strengthening, however, the traditional summer job could begin to make a
comeback.

この読み方を習得することによって、長文読解、リスニングも上達します。
